Celebrating 200 Years
Our Advent and Christmas celebrations this year mark the launch of our
Bi-Centennial Celebrations acclaiming all ofthe individuals, groups and
organizations from within andwithout the Parish who helpedmake this
remarkable 200 years
of Parish history.
Inevitably on such occasions wecompare now and then,
andwhile in many aspects of Parish
life the changes are simply breathtaking in others there is almost a
sense of déjà vu -some things have not changed.
The present sense of a church under siege with its
shortage of priests together with an economy on the brink of
disaster, perhaps more than most links the late 18th and early 19th
century to the early 21st century.
The spirit, strength andcommitment of the priests and
the laity which enabled the parish to grow and develop
despite this adversity, in many ways model the present needs of our
Parish.
In
recognition of that spirit that we launch these Celebrations and appeal
to all of you, our fellow Parishioners, to join in and lend a helping
hand in the organization and celebration of our Parish and its
achievements.
Our aim is that the celebration will help all of us as a Parish
Community to move forward and by the end of 2010 make our Parish a
better place for our families and future Parishioners.
We outline below some of the proposed elements of the
Celebrations, but we wish to emphasize the dynamic nature of
the process and the ongoing scope for creative ideas and the involvement
of willing helpers – we will be publishing a full calendar of events in
the new year – so now is the time to come on board and make an impact by
your presence. The committee to date is beginning to reflect the
Multi-Cultural nature of the Parish however, there is ample scope to
expand
this further.
The highlight of our celebrations will be the
rededication of the Parish Church on Sunday the 18th of July. Cardinal
Sean Brady has already committed to mark the occasion with his presence
as part of a weekend of celebrations. This is the cornerstone of the
year’s activities.
We will also focus on engaging young people from all
levels to become involved in all the events throughout the year. More
than ever today we need their commitment, strength and involvement.
St. Valentine’s Day falls on Sunday this year,
which gives us the opportunity to invite married couples to celebrate
their marriages and renew their commitments in the presence of their
families and the parish Community.
The feast of our national apostle St Patrick with
parades and Irish Masses provides an opportunity for an 1810 – 2010
theme. Groups are busy at work on designs for floats, decorations and
numerous related projects for young and old.
Remembering Clonmels Military Heritage and honouring the roles played by
past members of the Parish and the wider Community, a memorial wall will
be erected in the Church grounds
Our celebrations would not be complete without a
“Family Fun Day” affording all of us the opportunity to come together
and relax and enjoy a fun filled atmosphere. This will take place in
early September.
Recognizing the role and contribution of the many
services, organizations, (social and community) and statutory bodies
that have supported the Parish over the years, we will dedicate special
Sunday Masses to individual or groups of organisations as a way of
expressing our appreciation to the many unsung heroes and heroines of
our community.
Under
the guidance of a separate committee the Convent building is being
re-developed to meet the future needs of the Parish, for example its
innovative Youth Café
Keeping in mind the historical nature of the celebrations a wide variety
of projects are being undertaken by the
Cultural and Heritage Group which will include schools competitions,
photographic and memorabilia exhibitions and
commemorative publications.
Action groups have planned for many specific events, so now is the time
to become personally involved and provide a helping
hand and ensure the success of the Celebrations.
Please contact any person of your choice and let them
know of your willingness to get involved.
Wishing one and all a holy and rewarding year of celebration.
